The Opportunity
This is a technically focused, hands-on engineering role at the core of what we do. As an Automation (Control Systems) Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, programming, and commissioning of industrial control and automation systems for Materials Handling projects across Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom & USA markets and other international locations.
You will work closely with our Sales, Projects, Mechanical Design, Electrical Design, and Operations teams to deliver efficient, high-quality automation solutions for our customers. You will also provide after-sales technical support, customer training, and contribute to the ongoing development of our automation standards.

What You Will Be Responsible For
- Design and Programming: Design, program, and commission PLC, SCADA, and HMI systems for industrial automation and materials handling projects, primarily using Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000/RSLogix) and Siemens (TIA Portal/Step 7) platforms.
- Commissioning: Lead and support on-site installation and commissioning of automation systems at customer facilities domestically and internationally. Trips are typically up to four weeks in duration.
- Electrical Design: Interpret electrical drawings and schematics, identify and specify control system components, and work in close collaboration with the electrical design team throughout the project lifecycle.
- Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve automation and control system faults efficiently and cost-effectively, both remotely and on-site, minimising downtime for our customers.
- After-Sales Support: Provide technical training to customer operations staff and ongoing support for software issues, system updates, and general queries. Contribute to the on-call roster for after-sales service.
- Documentation: Produce thorough, accurate project documentation across all stages of the project lifecycle. Communicate progress and issues clearly to project managers and internal stakeholders.
- Health and Safety: Commit to and actively uphold MHM's health and safety standards across all engineering and on-site activities at all times.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation Engineering, or a related field or an Electrical Trade qualification with a strong automation and PLC programming track record
- Solid experience with PLC programming, specifically Allen-Bradley (RSLogix / Studio 5000) and Siemens (TIA Portal / Step 7); experience across multiple platforms is highly regarded
- Hands-on SCADA and HMI development experience. FactoryTalk View, Ignition, and WinCC are the platforms used in-house
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus, Profibus)
- Experience with industrial safety systems and standards is advantageous
- Demonstrated ability to commission automation systems on-site, including travel away from base
- Australian work rights (Citizen, Permanent Resident, or current valid work visa) and a Passport that allows you to travel easily to international locations (USA & Canada, Europe etc etc)
